CT coronary angiography (CTCA, a detailed scan of the heart’s blood vessels) takes pictures of your coronary arteries (the arteries supplying your heart). Iodinated contrast medium (a special dye containing iodine) is injected into a vein to make these vessels easier to see. The scan helps your doctor look for fatty build-up and narrowing. It answers a different question from a calcium score. Your doctor can help decide which scan you need.
Ask about CT coronary angiography on WhatsAppWho may benefit?
Your doctor may recommend CTCA when they need a closer look at the blood vessels supplying your heart. Having high cholesterol or another risk factor does not automatically mean you need this scan.
Tell us before booking
Tell us if you may be pregnant, have kidney or heart problems, or have reacted to scan dye before. Bring a list of your medicines. This helps the team plan your scan safely.

Ask whether you need to avoid food or caffeine before your visit. The team may ask for a blood test to check your kidneys. Some people need medicine to slow their heartbeat for clearer pictures. Only take this if prescribed, and do not change your usual medicines without advice.
What happens?
An intravenous cannula (a small plastic tube) is placed in a vein, usually in your arm, for the contrast injection. Sticky patches on your chest track your heartbeat. You lie on the scanner table and briefly hold your breath when asked. You may feel warm for a short time as the dye goes in.
Risks and limitations
CTCA uses X-rays. The team checks for kidney problems and previous reactions to scan dye before proceeding. Movement, an irregular heartbeat or a lot of calcium in the arteries can make the pictures harder to read. Your doctor may still recommend another test.
Make room for the full appointment
Please ask the team to confirm the time needed for registration, clinical checks, preparation, scanning and any observation. Confirm when your written report will be ready and who will explain the findings and next steps.
Bring relevant previous results and any existing referral. Scan availability and clinical assessment apply to walk-ins.
Ask about CT coronary angiography on WhatsAppYour CTCA questions
Is CTCA the same as calcium scoring?
No. A calcium score looks for calcium in fatty build-up and does not usually need a dye injection. CTCA uses injected dye to show the blood vessels in more detail and look for narrowing.
Is this catheter angiography?
No. CTCA takes pictures using a CT scanner, with dye injected into a vein. A catheter angiogram involves guiding a thin tube through an artery to the heart. Your doctor will explain which test you need.
Is there an injection?
Yes. CTCA usually needs a dye containing iodine. It is given through a small plastic tube placed in a vein, usually in your arm.
Can I eat before the appointment?

Calcium score, CTCA or treadmill test?
Each test answers a different question. Your doctor can help choose the right one.
| Test | What it checks | Dye and radiation |
|---|---|---|
| Calcium score | Calcium in fatty build-up in the heart’s blood vessels. Helps assess future heart risk, not the percentage of blockage. | No dye for a standard scan. Uses X-rays. |
| CTCA | The heart’s blood vessels, fatty build-up and narrowing. | Usually needs injected dye. Uses X-rays. |
| Treadmill test | How your heart responds to exercise. | No X-rays or dye. Not offered at IIHC. |
